Salerno Scholarships

KYLE HEAVRIN

The latest young man to benefit from a Salerno Scholarship is Kyle Heavrin of Washington, Illinois. Kyle graduated from Illinois State University in May 2010 and is looking for his first job in broadcasting. During Spring 2010 he was an intern at WMBD-TV in Peoria, one of the places that Randy worked early in his career. At ISU’s TV-10 News program, Kyle worked four semesters, as a weathercaster, features reporter, and sports anchor/producer. Kyle is known for his love of Extreme Sports; he was a member of ISU’s Wakeboarding Team which recently placed 5th in the College Nationals.

JEFF WAGNER (Pictured with Don and Donna Salerno)

The 2009 winner of Illinois State University’s Salerno Scholarship is off to a good start in his broadcasting career. Jeff Wagner is a reporter for WCIA-TV in Champaign, where he works primarily out of the station’s Decatur Bureau. He’s also being groomed to be the station’s next weekend co-anchor. The scholarship money Jeff received in 2009 helped cover his expenses as he did a summer internship at WTVO in Rockford (also an early stop in Randy’s career). Jeff is from Naperville, where his parents and sister still live.

DAN VASKO

The first winner of the Crystal Lake South High School Scholarship has just finished his freshman year at Illinois State University. Dan Vasko was awarded $500 in Spring 2009. At Illinois State, he has been working at the campus radio station WZND (yes, Randy worked there, too). His dream is to be a sportscaster at ESPN.
